Publishing

The Majority Press Inc. is an academically oriented publisher of Black Studies books.  We try to produce well-edited and visually attractive books.  If we accept your manuscript we will pay for the normal costs of publication (typesetting, cover art, printing, binding, etc.), subject only to any stipulation to the contrary in the contract that we both will sign.  We will pay you a royalty as stated in our contract.

We will market your book to the best of our ability in some or all of the following ways, among others - bulk mailings, review copies,  Bowker bibliographies, press releases, journal ads, display at conferences, etc.  We work with several wholesalers and distributors in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean and England.  We have had reasonable success getting our books into independent bookstores and public and academic libraries.  To date we have made only modest incursions into the large chain bookstores.  Our books have been adopted as classroom texts on dozens of campuses, primarily in the United States, but also in Canada and the Caribbean.  We have received the occasional order or inquiry from such far away places as Namibia, Brazil, South Africa, Australia, Ghana, China, Germany, Benin, Holland, Zimbabwe, Senegal and Italy.  We are always on the lookout for new areas to penetrate.  Our books can easily be special-ordered by bookstores or libraries anywhere in the world, since we are listed in the standard print and on-line reference sources (Forthcoming Books in Print,  Books in Print,  Amazon.Com,etc.).

Since we are a small press, however, we must warn against the unrealistic expectations harbored by some authors, based on newspaper accounts of what the major presses can do.  We rarely pay for authors’ promotional tours.  (We may however, sometimes be able to facilitate media interviews, book signings and the occasional speaking engagement).

Unless a miracle happens do not expect to be able to make a living off of royalties paid by us.  Some of our books will sell as little as a few hundred (or even less) in a year.  Others may sell several thousand.  The chances of having the type of blockbuster reported periodically in the press are very slim.

We believe that what we have stated here holds true for many smaller publishers.  We feel the need to "put it in writing," however, to forestall future problems with authors holding unrealistic expectations.

Finally, we welcome input from our authors in marketing their books.  Authors often know the market for their work better than anyone else.
